The largest barge ever to work on the river Thames

The 4,400 tonne PULSA measuring 108 metres long and 15 metres wide sorted out the coal moving problem by transporting about 25,000 tonnes of coal a week from the closed West Thurrock Power Station to neighbouring Tilbury Power Station that was located seven miles down river.

The cheapest Method

At the time using the barge was the cheapest method of transporting the coal, avoiding the environmental impact of 20,000 truck journeys

The barge made the journey once a day, over seven days of the week, loading by day and discharging at night

Working Day & Night

The operation took five months to complete Twenty five tonne Dumper trucks took the coal from the coal field to the Jetty, and it was then loaded onto the barge by a transfer conveyor
