The Stations Early History

West Thurrocks early history went back over 45 years up to the day of the closure in 1993.

It was in 1947 that the Stone Ness location was first suggested as a possible site for a Power Station.

Low quality Agricultural land.

The site was in fact, one of six power station sites in the London area put forward by the Minister of Town and Country Planning to meet the generation expansion requirements expected during the late 1960's, due to the site being designated as low quality agricultural land

London Under ground Railway.

During the construction of part of the London Underground Railway system, a large quantity of spoil was deposited on the south eastern section of the site.

Flooding Problems.

First inspections of the site revealed a flooding problem, particularly over to the west facing area of the site and work was already in progress to reinforce the eroded river banks and Sea Wall
